Biography
As the only member of the squad to have played at Wembley (and indeed the only Hull City side who have played at Wembley), Johnson is naturally composed and dominating on the pitch. Despite idolising Dean Windass, there is a lot more to James' play than raw northern brashness. He is equally competent in both the centre of defense and midfield, well organised, strong in the tackle and confident on the ball.
Having retired from football at an early age due to an injury ravaged career, Johnson was coerced into becoming a Rugby player on his arrival at Exeter, much to the dismay of the college footballers. This reluctance to play football may have been due to the close nature of defender Dave Lee's relationship with James' mam. Although rugby and an unnecessarily large Spanish workload prevented him from becoming a regular first team player in his first year, persistent nagging resulted in his appearances increasing in frequency towards the end of the year and hopefully this will continue into the coming season, even if he's carrying a Cervantes novel in one hand.
